Met Gala 2024: The Carpet Is Rolled Up On The Most Anticipated Night Of Fashion

The dress code was “The Garden of Time,”, the theme was inspired by J. G. Ballard’s 1962 short story of the same name. This year's carpet was green and cream and was graced by many guests and designers.

This year we got to see a variety of designs, with different interpretations and approaches to the theme. Some attendees took a literal approach to the theme, dressing in floral-covered looks such as Gigig Hadiid’s Thom Browne look, Sydney Sweeny's Miu Miu dress, Alia Bhats’s Sabyasachi Sari or Lana Del Rey’s Alexander McQueen gown.

Some leaned into the mention of “Time” with Tyla in Balmain holding an hourglass-shaped bag. Some opted for a more timeless look such as archival Jean-paul Gaultier, Christian Dior, Alexander Mcqueen, and Balenciaga.

Other attendees incorporated the destructive elements of Ballard’s story, actress Rebecca Ferguson wore a Thom Browne gown made to resemble a garden statue engulfed by ravens.

Zendaya, one of the event’s co-chairs, first arrived in a custom ocean-blue Margiela by John Galliano gown adorned with a dramatic headpiece and then came back to close the carpet in a never-worn Spring 1996 Givenchy black gown, also designed by Galliano.

With over 200 looks seen on the carpet made by renowned designers and pulled from the archives, there were some elements the looks had in common.

Makeup and hair looks generally fell into two main categories to correspond with the theme “Garden of Time” to celebrate the “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibition. Bold glamour referenced vintage looks or fresh-faced, boho-themed hair, skin and makeup to emphasise gardens and florals. Host Zendaya accomplished both looks in one night, with a full outfit change that also involved a beauty switch-up from heavy and dramatic to floral and ethereal.

While the classic flower crown was seen, boho references were made, such as Zendaya’s full-head bouquet and Amanda Seyfried’s all-silver leaf tiara. Many hairstyles featured flowers ranging from a light scattering on celebrities including the two roses on Kylie Jenner’s sleek bun. Lana Del Rey opted for her own version of the anti-flower crown made of branches to accompany her Alexander McQueen look. Del Rey’s crown of twigs and Zendaya’s flower headpiece were among the biggest statements of the night.

The “Sleeping Beauty” theme also inspired the long, wavy, loose hair looks. Beachy mermaid-like boho waves were a common sight, sported by Chemena Kamali, Emma Mackey, Harris Reed, Kendall Jenner, Kim Kardashian and Lana Del Rey.

Heavier makeup looks were reminiscent of the 90’s supermodel look and were worn by celebrities such as Emma Chamberlain and Gigi Hadid.

In contrast to the softness of the florals, silver and sparkles were also seen. Sydney Sweeney was covered in body and face glitter. Merging the shiny silver aesthetic with the heavy emphasis on natural looks this year was Elle Fanning’s glassy skin.
