Fashion and Waste: What Can We Do?

There’s no doubt that fashion is one of the most influential, essential and prominent industries, but while it flourishes it is leaving a long trail of chemicals, and waste. The fashion industry is responsible for 10% of the world’s carbon emissions, and 85% of textile waste that ends up in landfills.

But we are not only here to discuss problems, but also solutions. So what can we do? The industry may be trying its best to improve with new regulations being introduced, but how can we give a hand?

Fashion is more than just clothes but this doesn’t mean more clothes. In the past 3 years, we have had the idea of capsule or minimalist wardrobes emerge. This doesn’t limit our options. We can create 40 outfits with just 10 pieces, we just need to get creative, it’s all in the details.

Here is what we can do as consumers:

  • Invest in higher quality long-lasting clothing

  • Buy only when necessary

  • Have good basics to build outfits around

  • Take care of the clothes you have (take care of washing instructions)

  • Buy eco-friendly and non-mass-produced clothing

  • Be curious and research before buying from a brand

  • Avoid being influenced by trends, there is going to be a new one every day
